From Alaskan Fishing Boat to Mobile Mechanic. My Passion for Auto Repair Comes to Cumberland MD!
Mobile Mechanic LLC began in September 2021, but my journey with auto mechanics started much earlier. I will share all of that later on this page, but let me introduce myself and tell you how it all got started.
My name is Eric Kelly and I am the owner and founder of Mobile Mechanic LLC. I am a one man operation with my trusty dog right beside me. He goes everywhere with me so you're sure to meet him at some point when I come to service your vehicle.
Now let me tell you more about my last several years and how Mobile Mechanic LLC started. After returning from a challenging and adventurous job working on a commercial fishing vessel in Alaska, I was ready to follow one my my early passions, which was fixing things.
However, long before any of that prior stuff, I was deeply involved in something else altogether. I was running a farm and folk school in Baltimore City called Charm City Farms. It was a place where community and hands-on learning were at the forefront.
At this farm we offered classes for farming, gardening, orchard production, and more. We even offered more specific interested classes for bread making, deer processing, canning food just to name a few. The food production that we got from the classes was given away for free to community members.
I also started the group Foragers of Baltimore where I would take groups foraging and teach them basic botany and how to identify, harvest, and use wild plants for food. However, like many services and businesses, that got shut down a few years back, the farm was shut down as well due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This major turn of events led me to change direction and rediscover my early love. From a very young age, I’ve been fascinated by how things work. I was the kind of kid who couldn’t resist taking apart toys, gadgets, and anything else I could get my hands on, just to see what made them tick.
As I got older, this curiosity evolved into a hands-on approach to fixing things. I started collecting items that didn’t work, determined to bring them back to life. This tinkering and learning eventually translated into working on vehicles, beginning with my own.
In 1995, I purchased my first car, a 1985 VW Golf, for just $50. It wasn’t running when I bought it, but that didn’t deter me. With some basic repairs and determination, I had it up and running in no time. That experience sparked something in me, and from that point on, I not only worked on my own cars, but soon enough, I was fixing vehicles for friends and family.
My formal education in mechanics came in 2021 when I attended Universal Technical Institute (UTI). While I excelled in the coursework—particularly in the electrical systems courses—I found the material to be too basic for the level I was seeking. I realized that the hands-on experience I had already gained over the years was more valuable than the structured program, so I decided to withdraw and continue pursuing mechanics on my own terms.
When I started Mobile Mechanic LLC, I started out by converting a full-size school bus into a mobile mechanic service vehicle. While it was a fun and ambitious project, I quickly realized it was overkill for the kind of work I was doing. After some reflection, I switched to a box truck, which has proven to be much more efficient for delivering the high-quality, mobile auto repair services that my customers rely on today.
When the business first started I was basically doing repairs for friends, and family and soon word of mouth kept me quite busy. With several years of success and many happy customers, I continue to proudly serve the fine folks in the Western Maryland area. Mostly I service Cumberland and the Allegany County area.
Whether it’s a simple oil change, complex brake repair, or a full diagnostic, I come to you, ensuring that car troubles don’t disrupt your day. My years of experience, combined with a passion for fixing things, mean that every service I offer is delivered with precision, care, and a commitment to getting you back on the road as quickly as possible.
While I specialize in a wide range of services—alternator replacements, radiator repairs, brakes, and more—I also believe in transparency. There are certain services I don’t offer, such as timing belt replacements, engine swaps, exhaust repairs, or audio system work, but for everything else, Mobile Mechanic LLC is ready to help.
I believe in the power of convenience, which is why I’ve built this business around the idea that customers deserve top-notch auto repair without the hassle of a traditional auto repair shop visit. I look forward to bringing my mobile mechanic service to you, wherever you are located in the Allegany County Area, I will be there to provide expert automotive repair services for your vehicle.
